The Association of South-Western Municipalities (ASWM) is implementing pilot measures to help communities in Blagoevgrad adapt to extreme heat. Shading structures have been installed at two playgrounds in the Strumsko district, providing protection from direct sunlight and more comfortable conditions for children and their parents on hot days.

The measure is part of the HEATSAFE project (Holistic Framework for Environmental and Social Adaptation to Extreme Heat), implemented by ASWM together with its associated partners, the Municipality of Blagoevgrad and Regional Administration Blagoevgrad.
Sensors will also be installed at the two playgrounds to collect temperature data during the next summer season and assess the impact of the shading.

Another pilot measure will be implemented in Blagoevgrad through the partial greening of the roof of the municipal administration building, aimed at reducing overheating during the summer months. The two measures address different aspects of heat adaptation and will provide practical experience and data on the effectiveness of nature-based and shading solutions.
Similar pilot measures are being tested simultaneously in six Mediterranean territories, including Blagoevgrad. The experience and data collected will be brought together in a joint report, supporting the development of practical solutions that can be adopted by other municipalities and institutions.
The HEATSAFE project is co-financed by the Interreg VI-B Euro-MED Programme 2021-2027.
